What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

  • To begin, our team will review your dental and medical history and discuss any concerns or symptoms you might have.
  • Then, your teeth are cleaned by removing plaque and tartar buildup with specialized tools. Your teeth are polished with a high-powered electric brush to remove surface stains. Flossing is done to remove leftover debris and plaque.
  • If needed, X-rays of your mouth will be taken to identify any potential issues not visible during a visual exam, including cavities between your teeth, bone loss, or impacted teeth.

Next Steps Following a Dental Checkup

  • When your checkup appointment is over, your dentist will discuss any findings and, if necessary, recommend treatments and/or preventive measures.
  • Prior to leaving, you’ll schedule your next dental checkup, typically recommended every six months.
  • Or if other treatment is recommended prior to your next checkup, those scheduling details will be discussed.

FAQ

  • Why are dental checkups and regular cleanings important?

In addition to regular brushing and flossing, professional teeth cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing alone can’t deal with. This will help protect your mouth from cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Cleanings also help our team find signs of dental problems early on so we can treat them.

  • Why is an oral cancer screening important?

Oral cancer screenings help our team detect signs of cancer early on. Many symptoms—like sores, lumps, or discoloration—can go unnoticed without a professional exam. Screenings are quick and painless and can be completed during routine dental checkups. Early detection can save lives, reduce the need for aggressive treatment, and improve outcomes.

  • How often will I need a dental checkup?

Most people should schedule a dental checkup every six months to maintain oral health, prevent cavities and gum disease, and catch issues early. However, you may need more frequent visits if you have a history of gum disease, frequent cavities or a high risk of decay, diabetes or a weakened immune system, and orthodontic appliances. We will recommend a personalized appointment schedule based on your needs.
