Gum Disease Treatment in Maryville, TN

Smoky Mountain Dental provides modern, effective gum disease treatment. Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a common problem that infects the gums and the surrounding tissues around your teeth. It often starts with gingivitis, causing red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, leading to gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss.

If you have gum disease symptoms, no matter what stage, our dedicated team is here to help!

01.

The Gum Disease Treatment Process

A full exam of your gums and teeth is done to determine the severity of your gum disease. This can include X-rays to check bone loss and measure the depth of your gum pockets.

If scaling and root planing (also known as deep cleaning) are needed, this treatment will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and below your gum line. Root planing smooths the root surfaces so the gums can reattach to the teeth, reducing the risk of future plaque buildup.

For your comfort, local anesthesia or sedation may be used to numb the treatment area during the deep cleaning procedure. In addition, antibacterial or antimicrobial treatments may be applied to the gum pockets to clear out bacteria and trigger healing.

02.

Next Steps After Treatment

Once your deep cleaning is completed, please follow routine oral hygiene to ensure the ongoing health of your gums. This includes brushing and flossing at least twice a day, rinsing with mouthwash, and keeping up on regular dental checkups.

If you start experiencing gum disease symptoms again, please schedule an appointment so we an evaluate.

FAQ

  • What are the signs of gum disease?

    Signs of gum disease include:

    • Red, swollen, or tender gums
    • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
    • Persistent bad breath or bad taste
    • Receding gums or longer-looking teeth
    • Loose or shifting teeth
    • Pain when chewing
    • Pus between the teeth and gums

Early detection is key—if you notice these symptoms, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

  • How is gum disease treated?

Gum disease treatment can depend on its severity:

    • Mild (gingivitis): Improved oral hygiene, professional dental cleanings, and antibacterial mouth rinses can help.
    • Moderate to severe (periodontitis): Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) remove plaque and tartar below the gumline.
    • Advanced cases: Surgical treatments like flap surgery, bone grafts, or tissue regeneration may be necessary.
  • Can gum disease be reversed?

Yes, it can be reversed, but only in its early stage, which is known as gingivitis. At this stage, improving oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings) can fully restore gum health. However, if it progresses to periodontitis, it becomes a chronic condition that can’t be reversed, only managed.

Early detection and treatment are key to preventing permanent damage like bone loss or tooth loss.
