Tooth Extraction Aftercare: Tips for a Smooth Recovery

Having a tooth removed can feel overwhelming, but proper aftercare can make a big difference in how quickly and comfortably you heal. Whether you had a damaged tooth extracted or your wisdom teeth removed, following our team’s instructions helps protect the extraction site and lowers the risk of complications. With a little care and patience, most people recover without any problems and are back to their normal routines within a few days.

Protect the Blood Clot

One of the most important parts of healing is allowing a blood clot to form at the site where the tooth was removed. This clot protects the underlying bone and nerves while your body begins the healing process.

To help protect the clot, bite gently on the gauze your dentist provided for the recommended time. Avoid drinking through a straw, smoking, or forcefully spitting for at least the first 24 hours, as these activities can dislodge the clot. If the clot comes out too soon, it may lead to a painful condition called dry socket.

Manage Discomfort and Swelling

Some soreness, swelling, and minor bleeding are normal after a tooth extraction. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your face for 15 to 20 minutes at a time during the first day can help reduce swelling. We may also recommend over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe medication to keep you comfortable.

Getting plenty of rest and keeping your head elevated while lying down can also help minimize swelling during the first day or two.

Choose Soft Foods and Stay Hydrated

Your mouth needs time to heal, so stick with soft, easy-to-eat foods for the first few days. Good choices include yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies eaten with a spoon, and soup that has cooled to a warm temperature.

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, but avoid alcoholic beverages and extremely hot drinks until your dentist says it’s safe. As your comfort improves, you can gradually return to your regular diet.

Keep Your Mouth Clean

Keeping the area clean is important, but you’ll need to be gentle. Avoid brushing directly over the extraction site for the first day. After 24 hours, you may be instructed to rinse the area gently with warm salt water several times a day, especially after meals, to help keep it free of food particles.

Continue brushing and flossing the rest of your teeth as usual while taking care around the healing area.

Know When to Call Us

Most extractions heal without complications, but it’s important to know when to seek help. Contact our office if you experience severe pain that worsens after a few days, heavy bleeding that doesn’t slow down, increasing swelling after the third day, fever, or signs of infection such as pus or a bad taste that won’t go away.

Following your aftercare instructions and attending any recommended follow-up appointments will help ensure a smooth recovery. If you ever have questions during the healing process, our team is always happy to provide guidance and support.
